SVCC Chess Coaches and Tournament Directors

 

USCF Certified Chess Coaches

Head Chess Coach:
 W. David Hubbard
 
David is the President of the Shenandoah Valley Chess Club and is dedicated to expanding the chess experience throughout the Shenandoah Valley. He is a US Chess Federation Certified Coach who works with new through advanced players. He is a member of the US Chess Federation and is a US Chess rated player. In addition, he serves as one of SVCC’s certified club tournament directors.
 
USCF Chess Coach: John Clark
 
John is the treasurer for the Shenandoah Valley Chess Club. He is a US Chess Federation Certified Chess Coach and works with David as one of the two primary instructors at our regular club meetings. His focus is often with younger or new players to teach the fundamentals of the game.  He is a member of the US Chess Federation and is a US Chess rated player. He also serves as one of SVCC’s certified club tournament directors.
 
Chief Scholastic Coach: Alex Miller
 
Alex serves as the SVCC’s primary scholastic coach and works with our Competition Team members to improve their play in US Chess tournaments. He has a strong interest in scholastic chess and is a previous winner of the Virginia State Scholastic Championship. He is a member of the US Chess Federation and is a US Chess rated player.

 

USCF Tournament Directors

Chief Tournament Director:
Nathan Courtney
 
Nathan is the SVCC’s Chief Certified Tournament Director. In addition to his role as the Chief TD, Nathan has a penchant for game analysis and is extremely helpful in post-mortem analysis of member games. He is a member of the US Chess Federation and is a US Chess rated player.
