In August 2026, The Pawn Project received a national award from the United States Chess Federation – Small Chess Club of the Year. The ceremony took place at the 2026 US Open in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where other luminaries in American chess were recognized.
In less than one year, The Pawn Project has facilitated chess learning experiences for 50+ students per meeting, including online and in-person tournaments. Their efforts have redefined what is possible for small clubs in less populated areas.
We are elated for the De Luise family and the Purcellville, Virginia community on this historic achievement. You inspired a nation. We are so honored, happy, and proud of you.
Thank you, US Chess, for your faithful support for all chess programs and players, regardless of size or skill level.
To our Shenandoah Valley community of players, parents, educators, and friends – thank you all. This achievement is impossible without you.
Chess is more than a game.
